Pop up heads are the workhorses of the sprinkler system. If these pieces get damaged, either because of wearing out through repetitive use or physical damage from animals or yard equipment, you'll need to get them replaced. Sometimes the damage is obvious, for instance if a spray head is suddenly shooting a stream of water out instead of its normal spray. Another obvious sign would be a pool of water forming around the head. But there are also some less obvious signs that our Aventura irrigation installation techs can spot. Patchy lawn growth, wilting or diseased flowers and brown areas in the lawn are all signals that watering is either too heavy or too light and this is usually because one of your sprinkler heads isn't working correctly.
When you first had your sprinkler system installed, every sprinkler head was checked and rechecked to make sure it was working properly. The experts adjusted each one down the line so that every blade of grass got the right amount of water. Now, a few years later, the heads are still trying to deliver the same water to the same area, but something has changed. It could be that a nozzle has gotten clogged with dirt, the riser may not be popping all the way up or the solenoid might not be firing correctly.
These are fixes that can be made in just a few minutes and don't require the replacement of the entire head. One head replacement could run $30 or more, so having six or seven of them cleaned instead of replaced could save you hundreds of dollars over a season.
